Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people face societal stigma and discrimination that significantly negatively impacts their mental health and overall well-being. The American psychological Association has developed guidelines for psychological practice with transgender and gender nonconforming people to help psychologist, psychotherapist, and other mental health professional assist in the provision of culturally competent, developmentally appropriate and trans-affirmative psychological practice with TGNC people. We will discuss the overview of the guidelines and their clinical applications
About the presenter:
Mr Riley Desmarais RPQ is a graduate researcher investigating genetic risk factors in bullying in the Master’s Program in Counselling Psychology at the University of Ottawa. Mr. Desmarais is a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) working under the supervision of registered clinical psychologist Dr. Kimberly Sogge C..Psych..
In his clinical work as a psychotherapist and Early Career Clinician with Ottawa River Integrative Mental Health Inc. Riley focuses on youth, transition-age youth, and adults who struggle with anxiety, depression, disordered eating, interpersonal difficulties.
Riley has a specific clinical interest in promoting the well-being and growth of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
As a psychotherapist Riley integrates Third Wave therapeutic modalities from the Cognitive Behavioral tradition such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion-Focused Therapy (CFT), Mindfulness-Based Interventions and other process based approaches grounded in contextual behavioural science.
