Mari Shanahan Somerville

Mari Shanahan Somerville, M.A., Supervised Third Wave Psychology Fellow

Ph.D. Candidate, Clinical Psychology (Concordia University)

The human mind is an exceptionally powerful thing. Each of us sees the world through the frames of our minds, which are coloured by the varied experiences of our past. Although at times it does not feel like it, we have the power to build new lenses and to interact with the world, with others, and with ourselves in different ways. We cannot change our experiences, but we can change how we understand and respond to their aftereffects in order to care for ourselves. I want to highlight the strength involved in taking this first step toward claiming your power and bringing your well-being into your own hands. Seeking out therapy is a difficult step for many people. It takes resilience to advocate for your own well-being.

About Mari:

I am a Ph.D. Candidate in the final year of my Clinical and Research Psychology program at Concordia University. I have over 7 years of clinical experience, working with clients across the lifespan in various settings, including community-based, private practice, school, Mohawk reserve, and psychiatric hospital settings. My treatment approach is rooted primarily in principles of Third Wave Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy. Among other approaches, I often draw upon tools from Mindful Self Compassion Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Emotion-Focused Therapy. I am a firm believer that, to understand who we are now, how we exist within the world currently, and how to find a healthy path forward, it is important to explore our past experiences. As such, I acknowledge that no two people are alike and, therefore, no two courses of therapy should be the same.

Therapeutic Approach:

My approach is client-centred, tailored toward the individual working with me. To facilitate this, it is necessary to develop a collaborative relationship with my client, as nobody is more of an expert on you than you are. I offer a judgement-free environment characterized by compassion and empathy. I know it can take time to feel safe with a new person and I strive to honour the time you need to feel safe in exploring your inner world. It is my honour to be able to meet you where you are and help to guide you on a path of self-discovery and healing. I look forward to our work together.
